Enlarged pores make the skin look rough and rugged, like the orange skin. It occurs across many age groups and is a common concern for many patients.
Skin pores are actually openings of the millions of sebaceous glands that are connected to hair follicles found in the skin. These glands are found abundantly in the face, chest, back, axilla and groin area. Generally speaking, factors that enlarged pores are divided into hyperactive sebaceous gland activity or the loss of collagen and skin elasticity either due to damage or aging. Knowing the causes will determine the correct laser treatment for enlarged pores.
As we age we lose precious collagen in the skin. As a result of that, skin laxity increases and with decreased tension around the pores, the pores appear larger. Therefore, enlarged pores is one of the quintessential signs of aged skin.
Overactive oil glands, due to various reasons which can be hormonal in nature, lead to excessive sebum production( or oil production). This in turn leads to enlarged glands which also gives the appearance of large pores or hair follicle size. Enlarged pores are often also associated with clogged pores that lead to comedones and acne.
Infections, such as acne, lead to damage of the collagen structure and scarring. As a result of the loss of collagen and skin elasticity, the pores appear large particularly around the acne scars in the face.
Excessive sun exposure leads to sun damage to the skin. That leads to loss of collagen and skin elasticity which leads to the appearance of enlarged pores.
Now that we understand the causes of enlarged pores, successful treatments with good outcomes are targeted to address excessive sebum activity or to enhance the collagen content. There is a myriad of treatments for enlarged pores. First things first are to adjust your skincare and adopt healthy skincare habits. If the pores still appear undesirable large, then perhaps a medical treatment or a comprehensive laser program will be considered. Laser treatments will be a more permanent treatment solution.
Non-comedonal or water-based skin care products will be more appropriate for large pores. That is because oil-based products lead to excessive oil which leads to large pores. Prolonged use of astringents or products containing salicylic acid, or vitamin c, beta hydroxy acids, to dry the skin may result in a rebound production of sebum and lead to large pores again.
Various topical and oral medication such as topical or oral retinoids in dermatology and aesthetic practices help to reduce sebum activity. However, these medications come with side effects such as dryness and irritation. We typically advise patients to moisturize their skin with moisturizers that are water-based often needs to be considered along with these medications.
Mild chemical peels such as salicylic acid peels help to reduce the excess sebum on the face, clear clogged pores and have a rejuvenating effect on the skin. The effects are however temporary as the sebaceous (oil) glands are not inactivated.
Quadralase is our proprietary program with 4 unique laser treatments that specifically address the problem of enlarged pores from all aspects and in all skin types. It is a treatment program that is designed and bespoke to everyone. Here’s how it works:
Needle Radiofrequency with Agnes is a treatment that introduces fine shallow needles into the dermis, a controlled depth, to administer radiofrequency heat into the dermis. As temperatures are raised to 80 degrees, foci of heat and thus potent collagen stimulation happens. The patented regulated tip of the Agnes device prevents this heat from reaching the skin surface, and therefore there is no incidence of any burns.
The results of Agnes is distinct skin tightening and reduction of pores. When done together with pico lasers, they yield an even more significant result for pores. Agnes is also an excellent permanent treatment for acne.
Rejuran treatment became very popular in Singapore 4-5 years back in 2016. It contains Polynucleotides (PN) which are DNA fragments extracted and purified from salmon. It is understood that salmon DNA is very similar to human DNA, and polynucleotides have strong healing and collagen stimulation properties on the skin. Its effects are very comparable to the effects of PRP (platelet-rich plasma) in skin healing, rejuvenation and even hair restoration. That is why rejuran is often known as a “healer”.
What are the benefits of Rejuran?
As you can see, rejuran is a good remedy to improve the skin around the eyes, and it only has minimal side effects like mild swelling which subsides within a day. However, the improvement is rather subtle from our clinical experience and requires several sessions to see a visible improvement. That is why for more visible results in each session, it is ideal to combine it with hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance of the skin, and it is responsible for retaining hydration.
When people age, they lose both hyaluronic acid and collagen on the skin, making it dryer and thinner. Replenishing the hyaluronic acid, therefore, enhances the skin’s hydration, which also makes it thicker and plumper.
Synthetic hyaluronic acid for injections typically comes in two forms, either cross-linked (longer duration ) or non-crosslinked (shorter duration).
For injections, it is important to avoid cross-linked hyaluronic acid as it will create persistent bumps in the surface.
Amongst the treatment options for large pores, this is the most pampering one. Especially for patients who needs deep facial cleansing as well as the removal of excess sebum that is blocking the pores. The results are immediate!
HydraWhiteis designed to remove debris from debris and waste from the skin effectively. It operates under the principle of TRIPLE HYDROGEN THERAPY, and this includes:

Large facial pores are usually due to hyperactive sebaceous glands, which is also associated with oily skin, comedones and acne. Large pores may also be related to skin health damage or aging as pores are more evident in aged skin. The bigger the pore, the more chances of developing acne.
Cosmetically, have enlarged facial pores makes the skin look rough and older. Makeup also looks cakey and unnatural for such skin.
Yes, most certainly. By controlling the oil gland activity and stimulating collagen for the deep skin, pore reduction results are obvious and can be long term.
You can prevent pore enlargement by having the correct skincare regime or by adjusting it. (see above) Having regular laser treatments to maintain a certain level of collagen content in the skin will also help prevent the earlier appearance of large pores.
