While it’s not a crime to want to look good for our times, it always saddens me when hopeful individuals don’t manage to hit their body goals despite putting in consistent albeit misguided work. Not all of us are professionals in health and beauty, and there are many establishments in Singapore that thrive through making a quick buck off innocent clients.

If you’re trying your best to build muscle, don’t be fooled by shortcuts like bedazzling muscle building treatments. They are highly popular in Singapore, yes – but let me explain why they don’t work.

I always remind my clients that weight loss and muscle building require consistent work and progressive overload. To put it one way: Slimming and fat removal treatments are not effective if changes aren’t made to your lifestyle and diet as well.

On that note, here are some adage scientifically proven ways to bulk up and look better:

Go to the gym

There are endless health and beauty benefits in strength training! Muscles grow when they’re worked beyond their capacity. What many don’t realise is that as our muscles grow, previous weights won’t stimulate them as much. Therefore, it’s crucial that you consistently increase the amount of weight you lift – you should be hitting muscular failure during your last working sets. 

Eat well and sensibly 

You know how you always feel ravenous after a good workout? That’s your body trying to tell you that it’s ready to ramp up its repair and growth processes.

If you’re trying to build muscle, it is ideal that you are in a caloric surplus or at least at maintenance calories. Throw in some quality supplements if you can – studies1 have shown that supplementation with probiotics could effectively increase muscle mass. 

Get enough sleep

Getting enough sleep is another necessary aspect of the muscle building equation. Our bodies repair and build muscle during deep sleep, which is why a daily 7-9 hours of sleep is recommended.

Muscle building treatments available today and why they don’t work

There are endless muscle building and body sculpting treatments available in Singapore today, and while they claim to help clients achieve a perky butt and abs via electrical stimulation, they only make you feel as if you’ve gone for a high-intensity workout at the gym – yes, patients often report muscle soreness after treatment.
