Types of Acne Scars

Ice Pick Scars

As the name suggests, this scar looks like a defect that is left by an ice-pick. It is one of the hardest to treat with resurfacing lasers alone due to how deep it is. Needle radiofrequency (single needle) can treat narrower scars with good results.

Rolling Scars

Rolling acne scars have a roller appearance. A subcision procedure and scar fillers will work wonderfully “to raise the roll” (thereby flattening it) and the resurfacing treatments such as Pico or CO2 resurfacing laser will smoothen out the surface.

Boxcar-scars

Boxed Scars

Boxcar or boxed scars, looks like a squarish depression into the skin. Smaller boxcar scars or crater scars, respond very well to skin resurfacing laser treatments alone. Bigger and severe acne scars will require a subcision and scar fillers to raise the scar in addition to skin resurfacing lasers.

Hypertrophic Scars

Pico lasers have replaced more ablative lasers in the treatment of acne scars because of shorter recovery time (CO2 lasers’ recovery times might be 10 to 21 days while Pico laser’s recovery time is typically 3-7 days). Secret RF (Radiofrequency Microneedling)

Secret RF is a radiofrequency microneedling treatment that introduces fine shallow gold-plated needles into the skin, at a controlled depth, to administer radiofrequency heat into the scar tissue.

This acne scar treatment can reach deeper acne scars, such as ice-pick acne scars, that lasers otherwise cannot reach. When used together with Pico lasers, they yield a significant result for acne scars.

With its fractional handpiece, Pico laser is by far the most effective treatment for most acne scars because of its effective scar tissue ablation and hence removal while having an excellent tissue recovery compared to conventional laser treatments such as erbium or a CO2 laser (ie. Fractional CO2 laser). The risks of hyperpigmentation are higher for previous lasers because of the high laser energies and heat delivered.

However, for ice-pick scars and larger rolling scars and boxcar scars, adjuvant treatments such as subcision, fillers, and the needle radiofrequency need to be considered.

Most patients find PICOMAX very comfortable during the treatment. For the pain-sensitive, there might be mild tingling sensations that are tolerable. Numbing cream will be applied to reduce any pain or discomfort.

Most patients have no downtime or distinct redness after PICOMAX. However, for acne scar, skin redness is expected to last 3-5 days. We will minimise downtime where necessary.

Improvements to the acne scars with our PICOMAX or Pico programs, as well as needle frequency treatments are permanent, and they do not recur.

Each treatment session can take about 5 to 30 minutes.
