Wide pores make the skin look rough and rugged, like the orange skin. It occurs across many age groups and is a common concern for many patients.
Skin pores are actually openings of the millions of sebaceous glands that are connected to hair follicles found in the skin. These glands are found abundantly in the face, chest, back, axilla and groin area. Generally speaking, factors that cause wide pores are divided into hyperactive sebaceous gland activity or the loss of collagen and skin elasticity, either due to damage or ageing. Knowing the causes will determine the correct laser treatment for wide pores.
As we age, we lose precious collagen in the skin. As a result of that, skin laxity increases and with decreased tension around the pores, the pores appear larger. Therefore, enlarged pores are one of the quintessential signs of aged skin
Overactive oil glands, due to various reasons which can be hormonal in nature, lead to excessive sebum production( or oil production). This, in turn, leads to enlarged glands, which also give the appearance of large pores or hair follicles. Enlarged pores are often also associated with clogged pores that lead to comedones and acne.
Infections, such as acne, lead to damage to the collagen structure and scarring. As a result of the loss of collagen and skin elasticity, the pores appear large, particularly around the acne scars on the face.
Excessive sun exposure leads to sun damage to the skin. That leads to loss of collagen and skin elasticity, which leads to the appearance of wide pores.
Now that we understand the causes of wide pores, effective treatments with good outcomes are targeted to address excessive sebum activity or to enhance the collagen content. There is a myriad of treatments for wide pores. First things first are to adjust your skincare and adopt healthy skincare habits. If the pores still appear undesirable, large, then perhaps a medical treatment or a comprehensive laser program will be considered.
Non-comedonal or water-based skin care products are appropriate for large pores. That is because oil-based products lead to excessive oil, which leads to large pores. Prolonged use of astringents or products containing salicylic acid, or vitamin C, beta hydroxy acids, to dry the skin may result in a rebound production of sebum and lead to large pores again.
Various topical and oral medications, such as topical or oral retinoids in dermatology and aesthetic practices, help to reduce sebum activity. However, these medications come with side effects such as dryness and irritation. Therefore, we typically advise patients to moisturise their skin with moisturisers that are water-based often.
Mild chemical peels such as salicylic acid peels help to reduce the excess sebum on the face, clear clogged pores and have a rejuvenating effect on the skin. The effects are, however, temporary as the sebaceous (oil) glands are not inactivated.
